Snow Shoes for Students
In 2014, Central Senior School and Community Care submitted a joint application to the GoodLife Kids Foundation which aimed to support sustainable opportunities for the physical activity of children. The GoodLife Kids Foundation approved nearly $10,000 for the purchase of equipment to launch new programming for children in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Upwards of 60 pairs of snowshoes were purchased for Central Senior students and their feeder schools to use as a way to keep active during the winter months. This project offered students the chance to connect with the outdoors (in areas like Ken Reid Conservation) and discover all the wonders that Canadian winters have to offer!
Here are some highlights from winter 2014:
- 17 snowshoe sessions were held with an approximate duration of 3 hours
- Approximately 360 students between 10-14 years old participated
- 16 ÍšChampionÍ› students held leadership roles during the program
The snowshoes are still used to this day!
